Ceevro's Shantylong Collab! Time to get nauti!!

Well we are back as promised! After a totally awesome collab on DRIVE, it has been decided that we should take this opportunity to hop on the sea-shanty bandwagon! We shall be doing the classic, "Barrett's Privateers," by Stan Rogers. Got a voice? We need it! Got a fist? We need it to be thumped! Got other skills that you think would make the song better? Skill us!!!

Here be how you join:

  1. Download the sample vocal and backbeat RIGHT BLOODY HERE!!!
  2. Place it into your DAW, set to 90BPM.
  3. Record yourself singing along!
  4. Because I want an epic sound, all entries must also give me a track of them thumping something (I personally thumped my laundry basket).
  5. Send it in .wav format (YES....wav is important for sound quality!) to me in a DM using a file sharing service like Dropbox.
  6. We mix all the entries together...then...we get the booty!

And a few suggestions on how to help us out:

  1. Please say hi, and keep up with this thread! If we've got questions, or need extra work, or have a rough mix to share, you will find it here!
  2. Use the highest sample rates you can, and make sure you're getting a good waveform in your recording. If you're topping your mic out, adjust the recording levels appropriately!
  3. If you can harmonize, DO! This is a vocal heavy performance, and we need those harmonies especially badly!
  4. It's just fine to submit more than one track, and also just fine to submit instruments. For the very first time, I did not submit a guitar...I will if the mix takes us in that direction!
  5. All instruments must be live-recorded, REAL instruments! No samples or MIDI.
  6. Tell everyone you know who can sing!

And...oh bouy...I had to work hard to keep this a secret...but @Step is coming back to mix this one!!!! His work on Africa alone should convince you he can handle the vox!

Jump on in guys! The water is...well...probably full of jellyfish...but it's no fun getting stung alone!!!

We need bass-drum type fist smashes! Find a big barrel, or a garage door, something with a big thump, and give us your fist pounds!

Great! I'll try to find something that makes a loud sound. By the way, you're a great singer! Your singing makes me happy and uplifted. As soon as I listened to the finished mix, my mood lifted and I wanted to run and look for something for the project. But I still have 5 AM

There a deadline for this one? My calendar clears up a bit on Easter Monday and I'm wondering if it won't be too late by then 👀

These things don't have deadlines per se, but rather a sort of natural progression towards completion. Generally speaking, it takes a week or two for everyone to get their tracks in, possibly a further week for revisions and specific instrument requests, and however much time it takes for our mixer to make it all sound pretty!

If you can get in, please do! If you cannot, please recommend the project to as many people as you can!

Took some time to get ahold of him, and he's way busier now than he was then, but he said he'd come back for just one more!

I'll spread the word. It is leading up to one of the busiest times of the year for me musically so I may sit this one out, but I'll tell people who might be interested. 👀

Absolutely. If nothing else, it takes five minutes to record a track of fist pounds on your desk! Every little bit helps!

OH YES! And should ye be wondering...here's the lyrics:

Oh, the year was 1778

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

A letter of marque came from the king

To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

For twenty brave men all fishermen who

Would make for him the Antelope's crew

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight,

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

She'd a list to the port and her sails in rags

And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

On the King's birthday we put to sea,

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

We were 91 days to Montego Bay

Pumping like madmen all the way

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

On the 96th day we sailed again

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight

With our cracked four pounders we made to fight

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Yankee lay low down with gold

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

She was broad and fat and loose in the stays

But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

Then at length we stood two cables away

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

Our cracked four pounders made an awful din

But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs

And the Maintruck carried off both me legs

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

So here I lay in my 23rd year

(How I wish I was in sherbrooke now!)

It's been 6 years since we sailed away

And I just made Halifax yesterday

God damn them all!

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier

The last of Barrett's Privateers

We need more singers!!! Bring more people in!

Almost all my music is entirely MIDI, while the rest of it has mostly MIDI instrumentation.

Still, I have a cheap "real" drum kit I can thump and a few microphones I can record live with. I'm not great at the drums, though, outside vocals, all you need is a thump, right?

I've been looking for an excuse to sing on something. All year I've been practicing singing (due to the massive amount of time I got during the COVID-19-related shutdown).

In addition, if nothing else, I may also be able to help with mixing too, if the need arises.

Can I still contribute?

Of course you can! If you are still shy about your singing, listen to the original version, and join in for the choruses. The traditional "thump" is simply bass drum on the beat, so even if you don't feel you're good, you can definitely handle this!

Glad to have you on board!

HEY ALL. Just dropping in to say hi.

I love sea shanties and have missed mixing this sort of thing very much (and have missed working with many of you here!). Can't wait to get started!!

I understand that you can again knock on any junk. So I'll probably clap and bang on different things.

That's just fine! For ease of mixing, can you make each instrument a separate .wav file, please? That way we can tweak each instrument perfectly.
