The Furnace tracker Discord server threw another contest for us to make demo songs for the new FM chip they rolled out, the ESS ES1xxx Series ESFM chip, and I also had to throw my hat on the ring by making a cover of Ken's theme.
This chip is a beast, it's everything OPL3 was and a whole lot more, this is a high grade synth, and I bet it'll do lovely with cheap modern synthesizers, however it's used mostly on MS-DOS based computers to play legacy OPL3 sequences.
It has:
- 18 channels
- 4-op FM technology with 8 waveforms to pick from
- advanced envelopes with delay and ADSR
- coarse and fine detune per operator
- stereo panning per operator
- semi-arbitrary routing (no more algorithms)
My only gripe is that the drums still don't sound so hot, of course the contest rules that I only use this chip, nothing else, and since it's all fm i gotta make do. I'll upload the FM only version on February.
