I swear to god, if I'm gonna keep coming up with base ideas of a drawing so late whenever a special occasion happens- I mean, happy (late) 10 years, Wii U game!
If I'm going to enjoy a game that's essentialy part of a series (more like a trilogy so far) and know that it began somewhere, then I would feel the obligation to pay a tribute of sorts. Or in my intentionally vague language, respect the elders.
Either that or it's because I barely drew the Squid Sisters... and the Captain.
The background was definitely the one that dragged things, but the truth lies the moment I started adding in Craig Cuttlefish just before the day rolled. I just can't stop improvising things.
Story time(!):
My memories for this are quite brief yet still noteworthy. I've seen a couple of slight gameplay footages and some fanart here and there, but the very first time I've ever even heard of this fresh new IP game was through JWittz's "Top 10 Nintendo Bosses" video (man, these where such a thing and yet have such a fondness to them, they're the reason why I take my take writing my own thoughts on some of the posts and artworks I make, I also remember being rather into Pokemon a lot while X and Y was the generation back then lol) where he noted about Splatoon's "shocking final boss" but he chose not to dwell on that too much because... you can't spoil a game if it had just come out. Y'know? However it actually took me up until before (and after, it's a thorough learning process, plus high school, then the university and among other stuff I was glossing over stood in the way) I got to buy the third game where I now got curious to check everything of what that series had to offer (in case you're new here). I recall a seeing a boss rush of sorts from S1 (which I finally learned about the "shocking final boss" JW was talking about, almost sounds like fate heh), then listening to its OST, checking out the characters and learning how roughly unbalanced (yet kind of fun) some of the weapons felt and how cleverly designed the maps felt. I no doubt recall being rather impressed by its whimsical yet familiar nature it presented. It's no shock why Splatoon would end up becoming and succes and resonating with so many, let alone still managing to garner in newbies still. It's kind of like the "Pikmin of the 2010s" in terms of its appeal and how much effort and care it's devs value in terms of gameplay, story and even identity (especially). And I'll have to be frank, without it, I would've never gotten to experience personal highlights like some of the modes' playthroughs, finally breaking the habit of only appreciating retro games and embracing what the future can provide, expanding my music tastes (and my artistic priorities), the noteworthy story campaign moments, becoming a self proclaimed "Side Order gusher" and finding several personal favourites out of it.
So there, hopefully you've gotten the idea of why a form of gratitude like this was in order.
Enjoy one and only Sea O'Colors!
Give out some comments here if you want to talk about it or even fave it if you like it.
